Keep These Out of Your Disposal This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest weeks of the year for plumbers, and most of those calls start at the kitchen sink. A few habits keep yours running.

Do This Instead

  • Run cold water before, during and 15 seconds after you grind.
  • Feed scraps in a little at a time.
  • Scrape plates into the trash and pour grease into a can.

  • Grease and pan drippings

They go down warm and harden inside the pipe.

  • Turkey bones

Too hard to grind. They can jam the unit.

  • Potato peels

They turn into a starchy paste that clogs the drain.

  • Celery, onion skins and corn husks

Stringy fibers wrap around the grinding parts.

  • Rice, pasta and stuffing

They keep soaking up water and swell in the pipe.

  • Coffee grounds and eggshells

They settle into a thick sludge in the trap.
